Wk1 Design Story

Our project is a 4D museum to arouse people’s awareness of environmental protection. We’re going to develop a prefabricated device that can hold a projector, it’s portable, and it’s scalable like a transformer. This prefabricated device will be transformed into an exhibition hall through the deformation and arrangement of this device. This prefabricated device will be equipped with an infrared detection system, which can interact with people, for example, people can change the picture by waving their hands.

In addition, the film is also a very important part of our design, we will use the film to convey a series of impacts caused by climate change and environmental pollution. Our design of the film is mainly divided into two parts. One part is to show positive things, such as the vibrant nature and the happy play of friends in the forest. The other part is to show the severe situation of ecological environment, such as global warming, marine garbage and air pollution. These two extreme contrasts can make people realize that it’s time for us to do something.

WK15 Team Management

In the process of promoting our project, it is mainly divided into three parts, the first part is the concept and scheme design, the second part is model production and technical drawings, and the third part is film production. I am mainly responsible for concept and scheme design, and Tom and Liu Bingyu are responsible for the remaining two parts. In the cooperation of this project, we have a clear division of labour, and everyone actively participates in every meeting and feedback, which makes our project complete smoothly.

We went to London together to see the site. The preliminary data collection, on-site photos and site survey were completed together so that we could all be familiar with the site’s history and spatial conditions. We will look for a case study from different ways, through various websites and books to find cases we are interested in, and draw inspiration from them. We have a WeChat group to share the materials and information we collected. At the same time, we will take turns to take notes of classes and share them in the group. At the same time, we will ensure the frequency of three meetings per week to promote the progress of our project. We usually upload part of the results we are responsible for through wetransfer to ensure the smooth progress of the whole project. I will upload and share the manuscript, intention map, video and technical drawings. All in all, we work together to complete the overall design of the project.

WK14 Created Environment

We used the concept of prefabrication when designing the device. Our equipment plates and parts are finished in the factory in advance, and the dimensions are modular and standardized, so we can guarantee the quality of production, and the assembly is also very simple. Borough Market has natural advantages. The ceiling is made of steel keel components. We hang the projector on the ceiling to project pictures downward. A good open-air exhibition hall has been formed on the steps. People can sit on the steps and watch our movies. The support frame on the table can place the screen, and the fixed triangle structure can also adjust the distance and angle according to people’s preferences, so as to meet people’s comfortable experience of watching.

We hope that the education exhibition hall can be copied, not only in the Borough Market but also in the art exhibition hall and shopping centre. We simulated the ideal environment and showed our ideas. In the art exhibition hall, we used a large projection screen and installed a projector on the ceiling to project the picture on the screen. Each projection screen is different. These programs can be controlled by computers. People can swim in these screens to get the most shocking visual experience. We set up a projection screen on the wall of the shopping mall aisle. The projector is hung on the ceiling, and the film is projected on the wall. Customers passing by can be attracted to participate in our exhibition.

WK13 Design Development

The design process is interesting and exploratory. We have done a lot of tests to make the projection display equipment flexible and portable. In the beginning, we only thought that the device can be folded, so we designed a three-stage device to make the device fold, and then the volume can be compressed to the minimum. At the same time, it can be stably expanded so that the image can be projected. In the second stage, we tested a slightly larger display device, and we used paper that can reflect the projection image. When the projected picture is put on the paper, the picture can be projected on the ground to form a good experience and interactive atmosphere. In the third stage, we hope that the whole device can be carried, because we don’t want to limit the venue to the Borough Market. Let’s imagine it’s an exhibition that can be worn away and can go anywhere, such as museums, seafood markets and shopping centres. We designed more details to make the whole body small and light, with good stability and flexibility.

WK12 Theses Review

In writing papers and project design, I read a lot of books and journals, from which I gained a lot of knowledge. This knowledge will further my research. My research topic is sustainable design. I think the two are not only related but complementary. The research of the paper will guide the development of my paper, and the logic of the paper will inspire my design inspiration. The inspiration for the topic direction and project of the paper comes from a book named design for the real world. The author puts forward his new view on the purpose of design. He thinks that design should serve the people. The design should not only serve healthy people, but also the disabled. The design should seriously consider the use of the earth’s limited resources, and design should serve to protect the limited resources of the earth where we live.

Victor Papanek had a direct impact on the trend of green design. He first proposed the concept of design ethics, that is, why design? I think as interior architects, we have a responsibility to do something for the world. We should not only do decoration but also create a better life for people and future generations from the perspective of function. I’m very interested in sustainable design, 3R design principle, recycle reuse reduce. I think prefabricated buildings are one of the ways to achieve a sustainable design. So I will use the principle of prefabricated buildings to promote my project research.

WK11 Detail Design

The design is divided into two parts: the top and the bottom. We have made a lot of deliberation on the details. There is a pull groove under the box above, and a metal hook is designed. The ceiling of borough market is made of the metal keel, and the hook can be hung on the ceiling for fixation. The empty space in the wooden box can be used to install the projection. While fixing the projection, it can also well hide the shell of the projection. In addition to hanging on the ceiling, wooden boxes can also be placed on the stairs as temporary tables and projectors.

The following part of the design is a three-section foldable bracket, we will design all dimensions as modular, easy to process in the factory. The three-segment bracket can be flexibly combined into a triangle. The triangle has strong stability. The screen can be placed by the slope of the triangle. At the same time, the inclination of the triangle can be adjusted, so that people can adjust the appropriate viewing angle. The biggest feature of the device supporting projection is not only flexible assembly but also convenient carrying. On the top of the wooden box, a belt is designed with a fixed connector, which can be carried on the body just like a schoolbag.

WK10 Scheme Design

We analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of the site, and the ceiling of the site steel structure keel provided a good natural condition for our projection suspension. The borough market also has a large stairway and many seating areas. Our foldable projection device can be placed on the desktop. In this way, people passing by can watch our movie pictures from different angles. We hope to attract people to interact and participate in our exhibition as much as possible.

The large steps of the venue form a natural sharing space, where people can stay and watch our films, forming a central point of the stage. The site is open and transparent around, people can see our exhibition in a long distance. At the same time, we have set up audio equipment in the venue. These linked computers can control the picture and sound in a unified way. Through the visual and auditory experience, people can better understand the information we want to convey in the exhibition. At the same time, there are cameras on the ceiling of the venue, which can record the pictures of participants in the whole process. We can upload these videos to the Internet, such as youtube, Facebook and other social platforms, so that more people can know about the exhibition and participate in our activities.

WK9 Movie Idea

The presentation of the film is a very important part of our project. We have set up the projection and support frame in the exhibition to better present the film. We hope that the film is short, so as to attract the audience’s attention and participate in our activities in the shortest time. The whole idea of the movie revolves around the theme of protecting the environment. Movie inspiration comes from movie perception. I was very impressed by one scene in the movie. I realized the magic effect by using mirror image on a highway. The concept we want to convey to the audience is what we are and what our future world will be like. Every action we take now affects the changing environment and the future of the world. Our present and the future world are like a mirror. What we do now will affect and change the future of the world.

The beginning of the film tells the background of the era of big industry, a large number of commodity manufacturing and factory building, resulting in a great waste of resources and environmental pollution. With the rapid development of cities, a series of problems such as environmental degradation, marine pollution, global warming and so on have been caused. The screen switches to some positive scenes, such as children’s smiling faces and green nature. Arousing people’s awareness of environmental protection is the future world we are looking forward to.

WK8 Case Study-02

The exhibition will be held in the centre of the open square, which will be assembled with pre-customized boards in the factory. The use of pre-processed plates can reduce on-site operations and improve the efficiency of on-site stage construction. At the same time, standardized size and material can save cost, convenient and fast. Around the business centre, there will be a large number of shopping and dining passengers after the lunch break and after work. After the completion of the exhibition, some people will be attracted to participate in the activities, which can attract more people to gather in the centre of the exhibition. This exhibition attracts visitors in a similar way to the original market concept, with free performance activities as the core to attract the audience’s onlooking and interaction.

The building materials of this exhibition are standardized, which can not only be assembled quickly but also be combined into different forms. In this way, when the next exhibition is held, it can bring people different experiences and save costs. We used this idea for reference in the design of the project. We hope that the exhibition can be easily installed and carried so that it can be flexibly adapted to different venues.

WK7 Case Study

The Nordic Museum in Stockholm, Sweden, covers an area of more than 2000 square meters, with ice blue and white as the main colours, highlighting the theme of climate change. Designers believe that climate change is a major issue for all people. In this design, the designer hopes that tourists can get a strong immersive experience, but also feel that people must act together. In this exhibition design, a large crack is displayed. Visitors can walk into the crack and experience the most real Arctic change. Cracks affect the Arctic in many ways. As the temperature rises and the ice melts, cracks appear. The designer has extracted many elements of the Arctic, such as the shape and colour of ice. He hopes to build an exhibition hall to simulate climate change in the Arctic so that people can experience climate change in the Arctic and arouse people’s awareness of environmental protection.

A large number of projections, slides, led liquid crystal display and audio are set up in the exhibition, bringing tourists multiple feelings of hearing, touch and vision. Tourists move from hard white ice to light green and blue water melting areas and finally arrive at the ocean that is completely melted into dark blue. There are cracks between traditional life and modern life. It is impossible to continue to walk through the ice road. People have to find new ways. The common use of ships and helicopters has gradually replaced walking, sledging and scooters. It’s not just an exhibition but an interesting journey for tourists.
