At the beginning of our second project, our tutor took us to the Tate Gallery. Tutor wants us to do research for our upcoming project in the Tate Gallery . The experience Tate Gallery brought to me was very pleasant and amazing. In this experience, I learned a lot and gained a lot.
Architectural features
The Tate Gallery was first opened to the public in 1897 when the official name was the National British Art Museum. Later, the museum was named after its founder, Henry Tate, and is now known as the Tate Museum of Art.
What attracts me most about the Tate Gallery is its architectural features. The Tate Museum of Modern Art, a masterpiece of Swiss architects, was rebuilt by an old power station on the Thames River. After the huge building space was transformed into a series of galleries, the turbines and generators were still exposed inside. Many critics believe that this is the best attempt to use industrial space to display art in the past few decades.
Artwork
The Tate Gallery is rich in exhibits. My classmates and I visited one exhibition area by one. What impressed me most was Media Network. CILDO MEIRELES. The sculpture consists of hundreds of radios, each of which is tuned to a different location. The concept of this work is related to the story of the Tower of Babel in the Bible, which is high enough to reach heaven. God was provoked by this structure, causing builders to speak in different languages. They can no longer understand each other, divide and disperse on the earth, and human conflicts begin.
What i have learnt ？
In the Tate Museum, I saw a lot of artists’different ways of expression, which gave me a better understanding of art. These artists use different materials and form different visual languages to convey their ideas to the audience. To be honest, some works of art do not surprise me very much from the simple visual aesthetics, which makes me begin to think that works of art are concerned with the expression of ideas, not the visual aesthetics. Like interior design, we should care more about the comfort of users than the aesthetic preference of commercial value.
